Babies are prone to infections easily, as their immune system are in developing stage. It is tough to see them suffering. Here are 10 effective home remedies for cold and cough in babies which are tried and tested. Home remedies will not cure symptoms immediately. It will soothe and relieve symptoms gradually without any side effects.
1. Keep hydrated
Make sure your baby well hydrated by breastfeeding or formula feed frequently.
2. Ajwain/ Carrom seeds/ Omam
Dry roast a tsp of ajwain in a pan on low flame and wrap it in a piece of white cloth. Make your baby inhale it or place the potli near your baby.
3. Coconut oil and camphor
Heat coconut oil( do not heat much, as coconut oil tends to catch fire easily) and add little powdered camphor. Let it cool. Once it is little warm, apply on your baby's chest.
4. Beetel leaves
This remedy is for babies above 6 months. Apply coconut oil/castor oil over the beetel leaf and heat it over a tawa for few seconds. Make sure it is just slightly warm. Place it over baby's chest.
5. Ginger and honey
Take a small piece of ginger. Wash well and peel the skin. Grate and squeeze juice out of it. To the juice, add a tsp of honey. You can give this to your baby twice a day.
6. Saline drops
If your baby has blocked nose, pour 2 drops in each nostril with baby's head tilted down for easy flow of drops.
7. Soups
Soups are known for reducing chest congestion. You can give vegetable soup or chicken soup to you baby. Chicken soup can be given after 8 months.
8. Tulsi
Add 2 cups of water and 4-5 tulsi leaves to a pan. Bring it to boil and let it simmer for 2-3 mins. Let it cool. You can give few sips of this water 3-4 times a day. This also improves baby's immunity.
9. Warm water bath
Warm water bath relieves congestion and helps baby to breath easily. You can even add eucalyptus oil to the water.
10. Vapor rub( 1 year +)
Baby rubs are available in market now. Apply baby rub over chest, back and feet of you baby while sleeping. Never apply much.
